You don’t need a perfect opening line. A simple question and a little curiosity can take you a long way.
Start with where you are
“Have you been here before?” works at a café, a class, or an event. It gives the other person an easy place to begin.
Ask about their day
“How has your day been?” often invites a more personal answer than “How are you?” Try a gentle follow-up: “What was the best part?”
Look for something in common
“Are you taking the evening class too?” or “How do you know the host?” gives you a shared starting point.
Share a little about yourself
“I’m trying to find a good place for lunch around here. Do you have a favourite?” A small detail makes your question feel natural.
Keep it going
Listen for one detail you can ask about. If someone mentions a trip, ask what they enjoyed most. You don’t have to plan the whole conversation in advance.
Try it: Pick one question and practice saying it with a friendly, relaxed voice.
